About Us

Phoenix Choir was founded in September 2002 – arising from two former Eastbourne choirs: Cantamus and The Heritage Singers. The inaugural concert included music from the traditional choral repertoire and culminated with a recent composition: Praise and Revelation by Stuart Johnson. Since then a gamut of choral pieces have been undertaken, from earlier composers such as Purcell to the 20th Century's Bernstein – his Chichester Psalms – where not only the music but the language (Hebrew) proved challenging. Other composers whose works have featured in our programmes include Bruckner, Faure, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Vivaldi.

The New Season

This began on Wednesday, January 2nd 2008. Our venue is The Church Room at St. Saviour’s and St. Peter’s Church in South Street, Eastbourne – about half a mile from the station, and with on-site parking. Rehearsals run from 7:30 – 9:30pm, with a brief midway break for socialising.

Newcomers to Phoenix Choir often comment upon the friendly atmosphere – though this in no way detracts from dedication to the programme being rehearsed. Members are encouraged to reinforce the worked practised with follow-up and preparation at home.
